Houses into Homes is looking for dressers (especially small- and mid-size and not-too-heavy ones). We are delivering beds and furniture at a steady rate, and our dresser inventory is not keeping pace! You can help us replenish our inventory in one of three ways:--Donate a dresser! This week we have drop-off hours on Thursday, June 8 (12-3pm) and Saturday, June 10 (10am-12pm). We also do scheduled furniture pick ups -- you can find the form to request pick up on our website (housesintohomes.org).--Sponsor a dresser build! You'll support the purchase of dressers and your group (or team, organization, or family) can build them. If you don't have a group, we'll find one to do the building.--Spread the word! Please let your networks know that there are 30 households on our waiting list, and at least 15 of those households have requested dressers. UAY’s newest offering is a support group for parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth. Led by mental health therapist and LGBTQ+ coordinator Tim Grady, this bi-monthly group will meet in-person at UAY’s Eastdale offices in Iowa City. Young people find themselves with more opportunities than ever before to explore and embody non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender identities. At the same time, youth in Iowa are faced with an increasingly hostile political environment. As parents, we find ourselves in the middle of this conflict, finding ways to balance our love and support for our children with a desire to keep them safe and see them succeed. Through mutual support, shared learning, and a mental health and developmental perspective, this parents’ support group will aid in navigating this challenging time, as well as connect participants with peer community, resources, and knowledge to feel more ready and able to support yourself, your child, and your family. ...
